Getting to the Base

Getting To/From Base Area:
We are not ski in / ski out.   We are about 1.5 miles up the mountain from the base area, so it is a quick jaunt by car. There is a skier drop off zone near the base, but for all day parking it costs around $5 (subject to change) and is about a 200 yard walk.  If you have 4 or more in the car then the parking is free!  Driving to the base area is what my family normally does, but there is another option…

35 Anthracite is only about 100 yards from the turnaround shuttle stop on Gothic road. Sounds close, right? The walk down/up from the house to the shuttle stop is possible, but not for the faint of heart. It is across an open field and is difficult with deep snow if no path has been forged.  If you have some industrious youth willing to beat a path for others to follow, then it isn't too bad to get down to the shuttle stop.

Going down is one thing, but coming up is another. Some folks don’t mind the trek back up the hill, but normally I take the car down and pick up my kids at the shuttle stop when they take the bus. They call on a cell phone or walkie-talkie when they are leaving the base area to coordinate timing.

If you are going to try it, take the Loop Shuttle that leaves the base area bus stop at 25 and 55 past each hour. It takes about 5 minutes to arrive at our stop, which means it picks up on the hour and ½ hour at our location. The first shuttle leaves the base area at 7:55 am and the last one leaves at 10:55 pm.

Driveway:
The large asphalt driveway at 35 Anthracite can accomodate four to six cars. There is also a one car garage available. No cars are allowed to be parked on the street. This is a house up on the mountain, not a condo at the base, so it is generally advisable to have your own vehicle(s) available for transportation.

Shuttle To/From Town of Crested Butte:
The Town Shuttle leaves the base area every 15 minutes. This is a great way to go to Crested Butte, which is about 3 miles downhill from the base area of Mt. Crested Butte.

Shuttle from Gunnison Airport:
The Alpine Express provides door to door transportation from the Gunnison Airport (GUC) to Crested Butte. Please see their web page http://www.visitcrestedbutte.com/businesspage.cfm?businessID=236 for more details.
